Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), was a French Impressionist painter who is considered one of the founders of the movement.  Enrolling in the studio of the academic artist Charles Gleyre, he met Claude Monet. The two would go out painting together where they developed the sketchy painting technique that characterizes the Impressionist aesthetic. The Impressionist focused on capturing daily life and nature—atypical subject matter of the time period—and Renior’s work from the 1870’s on reflects this.

Best known for his portraiture he acquired many influential and wealthy patrons, allowing him financial freedom to even move from just exploring the Impressionist aesthetic. His paintings are known their vibrant and saturated color, influenced by his studies of master artists of the Renaissance like Titan. Renoir suggested the details of a scene through freely brushed strokes, so his figures blend in the surroundings. Throughout his career Renior was a prolific artist, creating several thousand pieces in his lifetime. His paintings are some the most well-known works in the world, and are frequently reproduced.
