Frida Khalo(1907–1954) was a Mexican folk artist best know for her self portrait paintings. Her paintings are celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience. Her artwork is heavily inspired by a tragic bus accident she survived as a  teenager, from which she suffered lifelong health problems. Her health caused her to be isolated in a hospital or bedridden for periods of time, which come out through her were, especially her self portraits. Her work was not widely acclaimed until decades after death. She was better known simply as a Diego Rivera’s wife until the 1970’s with the beginning of the Neomexicanismo movement.
